Diverse areas of study include: Sensory Science, Winemaking, Autism Spectrum Disorders, and Health Informatics. Certificates and professional concentrations provide rigorous postgraduate coursework for working professionals who wish to advance their careers or develop new areas of expertise. UC Davis and UC Davis Extension are known for their interdisciplinary research and learning approaches, creating real world collaborations to apply best practices to real world, complex challenges. This approach is increasingly of interest to an international audience. Most professional classes are held at UC Davis Extension’s Sutter Square Galleria in downtown Sacramento during the evening, daytime or on the weekend. International professionals interested in coming to Davis and taking coursework in these exciting areas of study are encouraged to consider enrollment in our Professional Studies Program. Here, students work with an adviser to create a program of full-time study, composed of certificate courses, other professional coursework, advanced English language coursework and appropriate campus classes. With careful course planning, certificates can be completed in nine-to-twelve months after which students can get Optional Practical Training (OPT) that allows students to work for any employer in the United States for up to a year.

Eligibility

Who should apply?

The Professional Studies Program is designed to meet the needs of university-level students (with at least a 3-4 yr Bachelor’s degree) and professionals from around the world who have strong English language skills (80 iBT or equivalent), excellent academic and professional preparation (GPA of 3 on a 4.0 grade point scale), and who wish to take courses in their fields of specialization. The following scores are also accepted in lieu of 80 iBT:

  • 213 CBT
  • 550 PBT
  • 6.5 IELTS
  • 760 TOEIC
  • Cambridge Certificate of Advanced English or Proficiency Exam

Optional Practical Training

Optional Practical Training (OPT)

Upon successful completion of the 9-12 month Professional Certificate Programs, students are eligible for the OPT (Optional Practical Training) that provides a unique opportunity for certificate program students to work for any employer in the United States for up to one year from the time of graduation. During this one year OPT period, students can get sponsorship for a H1 (work visa) from qualified employers if they wish to stay and work in the US for a longer period OR continue to pursue a Masters Degree in the field of their choice by enrolling in a Masters programs. This way, professional certificate program holders can extend their stay in the United States after the completion of their OPT period.

Program Cost

Approximate tuition cost $15,000 for 9 months plus $12,000 for 12 months of living expenses (higher side). Living expenses may vary depending on where the student chooses to live etc.

Getting a Job after the certificate program depends on the student and his network, which may be limited given the short duration that the student has been in the United States.

However, if the student applies through Exellor Education, our Consulting arm – Exellor.com will help students by making valuable introductions to hiring managers, provide job seeker advice such as resume review and guidance, introductions to companies that will either hire or train and place consultants at various technology companies in the San Francisco, Bay Area.

On-Campus work

While enrolled as a full-time student (12 units/credits per quarter (3 months)), students are allowed to work on-campus for upto 20 hrs per week. However, after the program completion, students can work for any qualified employer in the United States for upto one year, by applying for an OPT (Optional Practical Training). Exellor Education can help introduce to companies and job search networks to help the student find the job after completion of the certification program
